Fast food: the new challenges for entrepreneurs

Fast food is a major player in the market. This trend, inherited from the United States, is as much a fad as it is a response to the needs of many people. They often lack the time to prepare meals and the means to eat in more expensive restaurants. However, this phenomenon has an undesirable side effect: the rise in obesity rates in France. Now more than ever, the fast food industry must improve its image by offering healthier and more balanced options. This presents an opportunity for any savvy entrepreneur!

The pitfalls of today’s fast food

Fast-food restaurants often entice consumers with the promise of a ” home-style meal ” by offering complete menus and deals that include drinks and desserts. However, these menus are not always well-balanced and provide more nutrients than necessary. Unlike the sandwich market, which is striving to offer healthier options, traditional fast-food restaurants offer overloaded meals. Between overly sugary drinks, fatty side dishes, and excess calories hidden in seemingly “healthy” foods, it’s easy to make a dietary mistake. For example, with a hamburger, sandwich, or cheeseburger, you should resist the temptation of large portions of fries or chips as a side. Since the main course is already rich in nutrients such as protein and carbohydrates, the extra weight of fries will hardly make for a healthy meal.

The same goes for the extra-large glass of soda or Coke that often accompanies meals. It will only add excessive amounts of sugar to the body. For consumers, it should therefore be avoided or limited to occasional treats, with water or Diet Coke, etc., being the preferred alternatives. Regarding misleading dietary menu ideas: fish, which is just as high in calories as a cheeseburger, as are salad dressings.

Getting into the fast food business

Although the fast-food market is already very crowded, few chains currently manage to convince consumers of the healthy and balanced nature of their products. It is now essential to position oneself on the “healthy” trend to gain a foothold in the market, preferably by offering organic food. Sandwiches and paninis are particularly popular in this regard, as they are simple to prepare and allow for a wide variety of fillings.

From this perspective, sandwich shops can be an attractive option. They offer customers the opportunity to choose the ingredients for their sandwiches. This allows for the inclusion of numerous organic options to enrich the menu and provide customers with healthy yet delicious meals. The vegetarian fast-food market is also a very promising avenue, given the growing consumer interest in this type of diet.

Opening a fast-food restaurant doesn’t require any special skills. However, a solid culinary background is essential for offering quality products and adapting to ever-changing market trends. Positioning, visibility, and the restaurant’s capacity are also crucial factors if you want to build a profitable business.
