What can I use instead of peanut butter?

In my article 5 Fitness Foods That Are Not As Healthy As You Think , I talked first about peanut butter… Even though it’s a very good food for bodybuilding to gain mass, you have to keep in mind that it remains very high in calories and therefore is not necessarily for all metabolisms.

Why turn to alternatives to peanut butter?

I understand the appeal of peanut butter, especially for bodybuilding. It’s high in protein, perfect for bulking up. But there are also valid reasons to look for substitutes:

  • Peanut allergies are common and can be severe. A safe alternative must be available for those who cannot consume peanuts.
  • The quality of commercially produced versions varies greatly. Many contain unwanted additives like oils and sugar. A purer, more natural product is preferable, but I know that’s not something everyone is used to.
  • It’s very high in calories. One tablespoon contains about 100 calories, mostly from fat. While these fats are generally healthy, too much of them can be problematic, especially if you’re aiming for a specific calorie balance.
  • It is rich in omega-6. An imbalance between omega-6 and omega-3 can lead to inflammation and other health problems. This alternative should help maintain that balance.

That said, I don’t completely rule out peanut butter, especially if you make it yourself. Homemade peanut butter allows you to control the ingredients and reduce additives. Furthermore, its nutritional qualities—protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals—make it a good choice when consumed in moderation.

3 alternatives

For a bodybuilder, it’s crucial to choose snacks that are not only rich in protein but also healthy and balanced. Compared to peanut butter, here’s how three alternatives compare:

1. Almond puree

It’s the perfect alternative: almond butter has a similar protein profile to peanut butter, while offering a higher quality of fats. It contains less omega-6, thus reducing the risk of inflammation linked to an omega-6/omega-3 imbalance. Rich in magnesium, it promotes muscle recovery (an added benefit for bodybuilders). It’s also less likely to cause allergies.

2. Tahini (sesame paste)

Although it contains less protein, its essential fatty acid profile is more balanced. Tahini is distinguished by its high calcium content, surpassing that of peanut butter, which is beneficial for bone health. It doesn’t contain peanuts, so it’s not a problem for people with peanut allergies.

3. Cashew nut butter

It’s a lower-calorie option while still providing quality protein. Its fatty acids are more diverse and beneficial for cardiovascular health. Unlike peanut butter, it contains no additives and presents a lower risk of allergic reactions.

Note: These variants may be slightly more expensive in stores, as there are fewer options, but in general, the products offered are of better quality.
