The best ways to disinfect your hands effectively

It is important to disinfect your hands properly to kill or inactivate viruses, bacteria, and fungi, which are transmitted by hands in 80% of cases. Hand disinfection, therefore, consists of eliminating these microorganisms to limit transmission from one person to another. There are several ways to disinfect your hands.

Why is it important to disinfect your hands?

Hand disinfection is no longer just for medical professionals. The virus spreads very quickly because our hands touch objects and are then almost instinctively brought to our faces. The virus, carried by the hands, then enters the body through the eyes, nose, and mouth. This is why it is essential to disinfect your hands regularly.

You can use water and mild antiseptic soap or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer spray to eliminate the virus from the transient flora on the skin. You must disinfect your hands at regular intervals and, above all:

  • before preparing, serving and eating the meal;
  • after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose;
  • after each outing;
  • before taking care of a baby;
  • after taking public transport;
  • after visiting a sick person;
  • after and before touching contact points such as switches and handles.

Disinfect your hands with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

The ANSM (French National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety) recommends using a hydroalcoholic spray or gel with an alcohol content between 60% and 70%. However, be aware that frequent use of this hydroalcoholic solution can irritate the skin. In such cases, it is recommended to use an aloe vera hydroalcoholic gel. Aloe vera is known for its moisturizing and softening properties, which nourish and protect your hands.

Pour the gel into the palm of your hand. Ideally, use your own bottle, or at least a touchless dispenser. Rub both hands together, paying particular attention to your wrists, between your fingers, and under your nails. Stop rubbing when the product has evaporated. Wait until your hands are completely dry before touching or picking up anything. Note that this is a no-rinse product.

There are several brands of hand sanitizer on the market. Choose products that comply with current standards. Avoid using scented solutions whenever possible.

Disinfect your hands with soap and water

Antiseptic handwashing with soap and water is more recommended than using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, as it also cleans away dirt and grime. Use antiseptic soap, either solid or liquid, according to your preference.

First, wet your hands and wrists. Lather well, rubbing for 60 seconds. Make sure all surfaces of your skin are thoroughly cleaned, paying particular attention to your nails, thumbs, wrists, and between your fingers. Rinse your hands completely under running water. Avoid back-and-forth motions and rinse only once.

Next, pat your hands dry with a disposable paper towel. Avoid rubbing your hands; start with your fingers and finish with your wrists. As much as possible, avoid touching contact points such as the soap dispenser pump or faucet. Use a paper towel instead to prevent any risk of recontamination.
