CBD: What is myrcene?

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is currently enjoying a surge in popularity. Numerous scientific studies and user experience have demonstrated its various therapeutic effects on the body. However, it is not the only molecule in cannabis beneficial to humans. Indeed, myrcene, a monoterpene found throughout the plant kingdom, has been shown to possess properties that promote well-being. Come and discover this compound, which is generating increasing interest.

CBD: What is myrcene?

Myrcene, an organic compound found in nature

Myrcene is a hydrocarbon belonging to the terpene family. This family, along with cannabinoids and flavonoids, constitutes the major components of cannabis.

More precisely, it is a monoterpene and, as such, has a fairly simple chemical structure. Synthesized by secretory cells under the influence of light, it is a compound quite widespread in nature. Indeed, it is produced by both plants and animals. Besides cannabis, for which it is responsible for the characteristic aroma, it is also found in aromatic plants. It helps protect these plants against bacteria, fungi, and attacks by certain animal species.

However, it is not found exclusively in the plant kingdom. Indeed, it has been shown that many insects also synthesize significant quantities of it… Like CBD, myrcene has numerous beneficial effects on health.

What are its health benefits?

Myrcene has numerous therapeutic effects. Thanks to its sedative properties , it promotes restful sleep and is an excellent tranquilizer. This effect is due to the increase in gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels that it induces. GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter whose pharmacology is used to synthesize some hypnotics currently available on the market. Doctors are therefore increasingly recommending herbal infusions containing myrcene to individuals suffering from insomnia and anxiety.

Similarly, it promotes muscle relaxation . A massage with an essential oil containing it is therefore recommended to relieve muscle tension and spasticity . Furthermore, it helps combat pain and inflammation. It is particularly useful in the treatment of osteoarthritis. Indeed, studies have demonstrated its ability to limit the destruction of chondrocytes, the cells present within cartilage. It thus helps to halt the progression of osteoarthritis.

Furthermore, by inhibiting serotonin reuptake at the synapses of the nervous system, it helps to overcome depression. Finally, it possesses antioxidant properties . It therefore neutralizes free radicals, which are compounds responsible for cell senescence and the development of certain chronic diseases.

Interest in cosmetics and synergistic effect with CBD

Thanks to its aroma, myrcene is used in the cosmetics industry for the manufacture of perfumes. It is extracted by vaporization at a temperature of approximately 150°C. It is also believed to have a synergistic effect with CBD. Indeed, studies have shown that it potentiates the effect of CBD by acting on its receptors.
