5 tips to maintain good energy levels (without caffeine)

Today, I’m going to share some alternative strategies for boosting your energy without using caffeine. I’m not going to give you the usual advice you find everywhere (eat well, drink well, sleep well…) but rather some more specific techniques.

These methods are based on my personal experience, my reading, and listening to podcasts in English.

1. Stabilize blood sugar

Glucose is our primary source of energy and is responsible for maintaining energy levels throughout the day.

But fluctuations in blood sugar levels are also one of the biggest causes of daily fatigue. For example, after eating a meal high in simple carbohydrates, energy often spikes, followed by a sharp drop, which can leave you feeling tired and lethargic. The key to maintaining consistent energy throughout the day is managing blood sugar fluctuations.

Choose complex carbohydrates such as vegetables, whole fruits, and whole grains, which release energy more slowly and steadily. Avoid simple carbohydrates.

The benefits of intermittent fasting

This is a method I’ve been exploring for several years, both for myself and my clients. Limiting your eating window to 8 to 10 hours a day encourages your body to use stored fat for energy, which not only helps regulate your weight but also stabilizes your energy levels. When you fast, your body learns to manage energy more efficiently, reducing the spikes and dips that can occur after carbohydrate-rich meals.

By using these strategies, you will significantly improve your concentration and energy throughout the day, and enjoy more restful sleep at night.

2. Theanine: for more restful sleep

One of the most effective strategies for improving the quality of your daily energy is to improve your sleep. And here, the amino acid theanine plays a key role. Found naturally in green tea, it’s an excellent ally for those looking to reduce the effects of caffeine while still enjoying a good night’s sleep.

Theanine promotes relaxation without causing drowsiness. It’s the perfect balance for taking a break after a busy day or unwinding in the evening. It helps increase levels of the inhibitory neurotransmitters GABA, serotonin, and dopamine in the brain. These neurotransmitters play an important role in regulating mood, sleep, emotions, and concentration.

To reap its benefits, simply drink one or two cups of green tea a day. For those who aren’t tea fans or are looking for a more concentrated dose, theanine supplements are also an effective option. Taking 100 to 200 mg before bed can significantly improve your sleep quality without causing the common side effects of sleeping pills.

3. Exercise every day

Beyond its overall health benefits, physical exercise is a powerful energy booster. As a coach, I have repeatedly observed how well-structured training programs transform not only my clients’ bodies but also their mindsets and energy levels.

Regular physical activity increases the release of epinephrine (or adrenaline) from the locus coeruleus, a brain structure involved in stress and alarm responses. This release of adrenaline results in a surge of nervous energy, improving alertness, focus, and energy perception.

It’s the exhilarating feeling that many people experience after a good workout, and is sometimes called “runner’s high”.

4. Maintain balanced adrenaline and cortisol levels

Often associated with stress, these hormones also play an important role in energy regulation.

  • Adrenaline, also known as epinephrine, increases heart rate, raises blood sugar levels, and increases blood flow to the muscles. These measures prepare the body for rapid and powerful reactions in situations requiring heightened physical or mental performance.
  • Cortisol: It regulates the conversion of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates into usable energy. Long-term high cortisol levels can have negative health effects, but a good balance is important for maintaining energy and supporting immune function.

How to increase these hormones naturally?

  • Physical activity: combining endurance training with strength training sessions balances the production of adrenaline and cortisol, thus improving energy and stress tolerance.
  • Stress management: techniques such as meditation, deep breathing or practicing yoga can help you reduce chronic stress, thereby regulating cortisol production and promoting better energy balance.
  • Getting restful sleep is essential for regulating cortisol levels. Sufficient sleep and consistent sleep habits can improve cortisol management.
  • Balanced diet: certain foods, such as those rich in omega-3 fatty acids (like oily fish) and green leafy vegetables, promote a balanced production of adrenaline and cortisol.

It’s important to achieve a balance in the production of these hormones. Too much or too little can affect our health and energy levels. The goal is to find ways to stimulate their production naturally, without putting too much stress on the body.

5. Take NMN supplements

Recently, nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) supplementation has attracted attention for its potential to improve energy levels, particularly in active individuals and athletes.

NMN is a molecule that plays a role in cellular energy production and mitochondrial function, often referred to as the cell’s “powerhouses.” As we age, our body’s natural production of NMN decreases, which can contribute to lower energy levels. NMN supplementation aims to support NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) levels, which are essential for metabolic processes and energy production.

The potential benefits of NMN supplementation:

  • Improved energy and endurance: By supporting mitochondrial functions, NMN can contribute to better energy efficiency and increased endurance.
  • Metabolism support: NMN supplementation may also promote a healthy metabolism, helping to manage body weight and optimize the body’s use of energy.
  • Anti-aging effects:  Although not the main focus of this article, it is worth noting that NMN is also being studied for its potential beneficial effects on aging and longevity.

The recommended dose of NMN varies, but usually starts around 250-500 mg per day (preferably taken in the morning).
